'A Global casa'? The Bouligny family (1700-1830)

I am PhD researcher at the European University Institute. My current research focuses on the relationship between family and globalization during the eighteenth century. With this aim, I use the Bouligny family as my case study. These were French retailers settled in Alicante at the beginning of the eighteenth century, who around the 1750s participated in the Spanish debates about political economic, being at the Age of Revolutions appointed as soldiers and diplomats in New Orleans, Istanbul, and Stockholm. So, my research seeks to understand: how did family participate in processes of global interconnection and interdependence? Can a family approach help us to rediscover global history? The Boulignys allow me to investigate what we mean with globalization, the role of mobility in historical processes, the relationship between “the local” and “the global”, and the review of Spanish trans-cultural encounters. In addition, it also leads me to reflect about the role of formal and informal institutions, as well as the importance of agents in the imperial-building.
